Members and visitors who attended the August networking event of the Black Country branch found out that they have eight intelligences, according to research by Howard Gardner.
Nicola Hughes from Luminate Coaching gave an informative and extremely interesting presentation on the research into a person's IQ telling us that IQ measures are limited to language fluency, 3D thinking and logical ability. It therefore limits how we measure how smart we really are.
Howard Gardner identified that there are eight multiple intelligences and we are naturally drawn to use some more than others. It means we can be smart in different ways.
Eight Intelligences:
1 - Linguistic (being word smart)
2 - Logical (being number smart)
3 - Spatial (being picture smart)
4 - Kinesthetic (being bodily smart)
5 - Musical (being music smart)
6 - Naturalistic (being nature smart)
7 - Interpersonal (being people smart)
8 - Intrapersonal (being self smart)
Nicola focusses on Interpersonal and Intrapersonal for her work with business leaders as these two intelligence make up something called 'Emotional Intelligence' which large companies are now looking at to develop their people.
Delegates completed a questionnaire which helped them to identify the intelligences that they naturally used and raised a number of questions which were debated.
Nicola told the audience "IQ is important, but is not the defining factor in determining someone's success."
Nicola's work in Emotional Intelligence covers how people can motivate themselves; face their challenges; control their emotional impulses; handle frustrations; and get on with others.
